Tandem Reading Tool Kit

Reading is fundamental to learning, so when someone is having trouble learning how to read, it’s time to invest in the right tool for building up reading skills. Often, that includes the skills and attention of a tutor — but reading specialists often can’t spend every day with the student. The toolkit comes complete with comprehensive guidelines, journal templates, logs for measuring progress and tips for creating word lists tailored to your child or student’s specific needs. Tandem Reading is organized around syllable patterns commonly used in multi-sensory structured language programs (such as Orton-Gillingham) that help unlock the reading code.

The kit also includes pencils — a key to a vital Tandem Reading technique called pencil reading — as well as a highlighter and a reading award ribbon, to honor work well done. Phonics-oriented word lists for teachers.

The best teaching materials available still may not have enough of the right kind of reinforcement and practice for your students. Drill Bits is your tool for designing individualized practice, whether a student needs to practice one small skill at a time, or needs more challenging examples of phonics patterns and principles. These are especially useful to accompany a structured, systematic phonics program (such as one of the Orton-Gillingham programs).

Arranged by syllable type (closed, vowel-consonant-e, open, r-controlled, consonant-l-e and vowel pairs), Drill Bits provides both basic lists of words and nonsense syllables, without exceptions or patterns which have not been explicitly taught, as well as extensive lists of words with each pattern. It’s invaluable if you’re working with older students or anyone who needs more practice with phonetic patterns — and who doesn’t need more practice?

Drill Bits also includes a number of word lists with spelling patterns which are not included in the six syllable types, such as tion, igh and ch pronounced as /k/. This enables teachers to show students that exceptions are predictable, and to directly teach these patterns instead of expecting students to intuitively learn to read or spell words with those patterns.

DRILLABLE SYLLABLES

What is a drillable syllable? It’s a syllable, or a word, with a specific letter combination that a teacher, parent or tutor may use to help a student master reading and spelling of English. Grouped by letter combinations, such as vowel-consonant-e and short vowel basics, Drillable Syllables is a comprehensive collection of more than 1,000 flash cards. Grouped into six sets of drill decks, each deck provides 15 to 30 flash cards in such categories as open syllables — mixed, or short vowel overviews. Instructors who want the best tool possible for teaching the entire range of letter combinations will want to buy the complete, 46-envelope set of Drillable Syllables. However, Drillable Syllables also are available in smaller collections, designed to be used in working with students who have specific needs. These are especially designed to be used as part of an Orton-Gillingham program.

Individual sets come in labeled envelopes; each card is labeled in the corner (which would be covered by the hand when using). The entire package comes in a sturdy box so that you can keep them organized and accessible.
